Algae Biodiesel on CNET

The technology website CNET.com mentioned Algae Biodiesel in a short segment. Considering that Algae grows quickly, is carbon neutral and the fuel (biodiesel) being produced will run in the most efficient internal combusion engines we currently use, this could well be the best alternative to petroleum.

It seems simple;
1) grow algae
2) harvest algae
3) dry algae
4) put dry algae in to oil seedpress
5) turn oil from seedpress into biodiesel
what is the problem?

it seems they produced 276 tons of algae biomass/acre/year. Which would work out to 33,000 gal/acre/year if they used a high lipid content algae that grew at the same rate.

Unfortunately, AFAIK high lipid content algaes do NOT grow at the same rate. They are less robust species and grow slower coz it takes extra energy to create lipids.
I’m no expert though, i’ll be happy when Valcent proves actual oil yields.
It seems to looking good though, they’re definitely confident.

can you confirm that statement of “CURRENTLY PRODUCING 33,000 gallons per acre”?

coz i can’t find info that they are currently producing anything.

Co2 is a life gas. and compared to Oxygen, approximately 20% of the Earths atmosphere and Nitrogen 79/80% of the earths atmosphere Co2 is less then .4% of Our atmosphere. You have Neon, argon and a host of other gasses that fall into this less than 1% of the atmosphere. Green stuff needs Co2 to flurish and to give off OXYGEN! This Algie thing sounds ok but gees it requires Co2?
The Sun is the controling factor in the heating of the atmosphere except for some help from HAARP. carbon tax ha
